Having grown up in a small town in Cyprus, I was raised by my aunt and uncle-and it was my uncle who I have to thank for my entrepreneurial roots.

After finishing high school I left Cyprus for the U.S. so I would go to university, since there were no universities on Cyprus at the time.

Once I arrived, I lived with my aunt and uncle in a small town in New Jersey for 4 months. During that time I worked as a dishwasher. I saved my money and then came to New York City to go to St. John’s University. After the first semester, I earned a scholarship so life was a little easier. During college I worked as a delivery boy and as a waiter to support myself.

After St. John’s I earned a teaching assistantship at Rutgers University, where I got my MS in Chemistry. Not being able to get a job, for the next 3 years I worked as a waiter, taxi driver, vacuum cleaner salesman, insurance salesman, etc. to make ends meet.

In July of 1973 I was able to get a job with Cheeseborough-Ponds Cosmetics Company and thus my interest in the beauty business began. I worked there for a year and, in July 1974, I went to England where my brother lived and I borrowed $6M to start my own cosmetics business.

In February 1975, I started MANA in a 900 sq. ft. loft on West 26th Street in New York City. With hard work and a lot of luck, MANA now employs over 700 people.

We manufacture for many cosmetics companies as well as make cosmetics and skincare for major retail chains. We as well market two of our own brands as well as a private label brand which we sell to salons, spas and makeup artists.

We are working on adding more brands to our portfolio. One of the brands we owned was Erno Laszlo. This is still amazing to me since the first formula I worked on at Cheeseborough-Ponds was a Laszlo formula and 22 years later we bought the brand!

While MANA today is positioned to take advantage of new innovations and technologies in the beauty business, we are also ready to pioneer in the world of “for benefit” business. We just formed “The Beauty Trust”-a foundation whose goal is to help the women of the world help themselves. We will endow the Trust with $1MM. Beyond that we will be selling various cosmetic Brands through e-commerce and a portion of each sale will be going to The Beauty Trust.
