The work of Theoharis David a practicing architect and educator of Cypriot descent living in Brooklyn, is the subject of an exhibit “Built Ideas A Life of Teaching Learning and Action”, at the School of Architecture of Pratt institute. The 19 mostly realized works shown through models, photos and the architect’s concept drawings, demonstrate the interweaving of four primary architectural idea themes; Ground/ Topio, Precedent /Proigoumeno, Symbolism/Symvolismos and Art/Techni.

These ‘built ideas” include significant works of architecture in Cyprus such as sports stadia and arenas, private residences, urban housing, educational facilities and hybrid corporate structures. Executed projects in New York are recognized religious buildings and a proposal for a Greek Orthodox Church at the NYC WTC site. The work of Theo’s students from the start of his teaching career in 1969 at Pratt and in Nicosia, Athens, Barcelona and Rome developed in parallel with his own work, is also being shown.

The public lecture “Talking About YOU” to be introduced by the visionary architect Lebbeus Woods, and preceding the opening reception will reflect on Theo’s 43 years as a teacher through the work of his former students many of them having gone on to become accomplished architects and teachers.

The exhibit which will travel to Cyprus, Greece and elsewhere, is accompanied by a catalog. The curator and designer of the exhibit is the young Austrian architect Christoph a. Kumpusch.

This exhibit is made possible by funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, with additional support from the School of Architecture, Pratt Institute, Thomas Hanrahan Dean and the Department of Architecture, University of Cyprus.

Theoharis David FAIA, is a Professor of Architecture at Pratt, a visiting professor University of Cyprus and design principal of his firm located in New York City and Nicosia Cyprus.
